Project Scope: Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans is home to the 159th Fighter Wing, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, a Marine Corps Reserve unit and host to other US Navy and Army activities. Following the landfall of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, RSS assisted in the construction of several new mess halls as well as installing new roofing in the majority of the naval base. The additional mess halls were necessary for the extra troops deployed to the area in response to the hurricane. The base’s 24/7 operating schedule, necessary to support NORAD air sovereignty and homeland defense and the Coast Guard’s search, rescue and maritime law enforcement operations could not be impeded.
RSS leveraged our strong labor relationships to mobilize over 500 workers to the base for this work. We also found incredibly creative ways to get the necessary tools and materials into the area and demonstrated a “whatever-it-takes” attitude to get the job done.
